Pisa's absorbing Museo dell'Opera del Duomo (Cathedral Works Museum) is situated inside an old chapter house. Home to a large and extremely important collection of sculptures and paintings, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo specialises in works relating to the ecclesiastical buildings around Pisa's Piazza del Duomo.




The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo contains many rooms of interesting exhibits, such as detailed models of the Duomo buildings, delicate 12th-century carvings and marble decorations, 13th-century statues by Giovanni Pisano, historic frescoes, etchings and many other prints. Other attractions at the Pisa Cathedral Works Museum include a huge 12th-century wooden crucifix from Burgundy - with a medieval-style Christ that resembles contemporary art, and an Islamic bronze griffin obtained during the Crusades and once displayed in the Duomo's cupola, before being replaced by a convincing copy.
